Tawang Travel Guide

High-altitude monastery town on a long Himalayan road with Sela Pass.

  • Best months Mar–May, Sept–Nov
  • Ideal trip length 4–6 days

Tawang is a high-altitude Himalayan town in western Arunachal Pradesh, close to the Bhutan and Tibet borders, and is home to the largest Buddhist monastery in India. The journey itself is part of the experience, crossing the Sela Pass and passing through Bomdila and Dirang. The town sits at around 3,000 metres. Plan five to six days including travel.

Best time to visit

Recommended

March to June and September to October are generally the most comfortable months, with clearer views. Winter, from December to February, is very cold and snowfall can close the Sela Pass and other roads. The monsoon brings landslides, so check weather and road conditions before you travel.

How to reach

By air

The nearest airports are Tezpur in Assam and Guwahati, which has far more flights. Both require a long road journey into the mountains.

By rail

Guwahati and Tezpur (Assam) are the usual railheads, with Rangapara North and Tezpur being closer to the route. From there you continue by road.

By road

The road from Guwahati to Tawang takes about two days, usually with an overnight stop at Dirang or Bomdila. Shared and hired vehicles are available, and mountain roads can be slow and affected by landslides or snow.

Where to stay

Tawang has guesthouses, hotels and homestays, and simple lodges are available at Dirang and Bomdila. Rooms can be basic and heating is limited in winter, so confirm facilities and book ahead in the main season.
