Meghalaya Travel Guide

Living root bridges, waterfalls and the rain-soaked hills of Shillong and Cherrapunji.

  • Best months Oct–Apr
  • Ideal trip length 4–5 days

Meghalaya, meaning the abode of clouds, is a hilly state in north-east India known for waterfalls, caves, rolling plateaus and rivers of striking clarity. Shillong is the capital and the usual base, with Cherrapunji (Sohra) and Mawsynram among the wettest places on Earth. The state is also known for its living root bridges and its matrilineal Khasi and Garo communities. Plan four to five days.

Best time to visit

Recommended

October to April is the most reliable season, with clearer skies and easier travel. The monsoon, roughly June to September, brings extremely heavy rain, which makes the waterfalls spectacular but can cause landslides, flooded roads and closed trails. Check forecasts and local road conditions before travel.

How to reach

By air

Guwahati in Assam is the main gateway, around three hours by road from Shillong. Shillong Airport at Umroi also exists but has limited flights, so check current schedules.

By rail

Guwahati is the nearest major railhead, with trains from across India. From there, shared taxis and buses run to Shillong.

By road

Shillong is reached from Guwahati by a national highway, and taxis are the most convenient way to continue to Cherrapunji, Dawki and other places. Hill roads can be slow, particularly in rain.

Where to stay

Shillong has a wide range of hotels and guesthouses. Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong and Dawki offer homestays and smaller lodges, which are a good way to support local communities. Book ahead in the busy autumn and winter months.

Top things to see and do

  1. 1

    Shillong

A hill city with lakes, viewpoints, markets and waterfalls such as Elephant Falls, and a good base for the rest of the state.

  2. 2

    Cherrapunji (Sohra) and Mawsynram

Plateau towns famed for very high rainfall, with large waterfalls and limestone caves such as Krem Mawmluh nearby. Cave access depends on conditions, so follow local guidance.

  3. 3

    Living root bridges

Bridges grown over generations from the roots of rubber fig trees, including the double-decker bridge near Nongriat. Reaching it involves a long climb on steps, so wear good footwear.

  4. 4

    Dawki and the Umngot River

A border town on a river with remarkably clear water, popular for boat rides. Keep to marked areas near the border.

  5. 5

    Mawlynnong

A small Khasi village known for its cleanliness, gardens and nearby root bridges, run largely by the community.

  6. 6

    Laitlum Canyons

Edge-of-plateau viewpoints near Shillong with wide views over the hills and valleys, best on clear mornings.

Food to try

Khasi cuisine includes jadoh, a rice and meat dish, and dohneiiong, a pork dish with black sesame. Vegetarian options and simple tea-stall snacks are easy to find in towns. Local markets sell fruit, pineapples and honey, depending on the season.

Travel tips

  • Carry rain gear and sturdy shoes with good grip, and avoid river and waterfall trails during heavy rain.
  • Many sites are managed by local communities, and some are sacred groves; follow local rules, keep to marked paths and ask before photographing people.
  • Do not leave litter, and avoid plastic where you can, as local communities work hard to keep places clean.
  • Meghalaya is a matrilineal society, and visitors should be respectful of local customs, dress and community decisions.
