Darjeeling Travel Guide
Tea gardens, a toy train and Kanchenjunga views in the Himalayas.
- Best months Mar–May, Oct–Nov
- Ideal trip length 2–3 days
Darjeeling is a Himalayan hill town in the north of West Bengal, set among tea gardens at around 2,000 m with views towards Kanchenjunga on clear days. It is known for its tea, the narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, mountaineering heritage and a mix of Nepali, Tibetan and Bengali culture. Plan two to three days, and expect weather to shape what you see.
Best time to visit
Recommended
March to May and October to November are generally the best months, when skies are most often clear and the mountain views are most likely. Summers are cool, the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain, mist and landslides, and winters are cold. Even in the good seasons, clouds can hide the peaks, so keep your plans flexible.
How to reach
The nearest airport is Bagdogra, near Siliguri, which has flights from major Indian cities. From there, the road to Darjeeling takes roughly three to four hours by taxi or shared jeep, depending on traffic and road conditions.
New Jalpaiguri (NJP) near Siliguri is the main railhead, with trains from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and other cities. From NJP, shared jeeps and taxis go up to Darjeeling. The toy train service on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway runs on selected stretches, so check its current status.
Darjeeling is reached by road from Siliguri via a winding hill route through Kurseong or Pankhabari. Landslides during heavy rain can close roads, so check conditions and keep spare time in your plans.
Where to stay
Staying near the Mall and Chowrasta keeps you close to cafes, shops and the toy train station, but it can be busy and crowded in season. Quieter homestays and heritage stays are found on the surrounding slopes, and many have mountain views. Rooms fill up early in spring, autumn and festival weeks.

Travel tips
- Carry warm layers and rain gear even in good seasons, as temperatures drop quickly and the weather changes fast.
- Check road and landslide conditions, and have spare time in your plans during the monsoon.
- The altitude is moderate, but take the first day easy and walk slowly on the steep streets.
- Buy tea from reputable sellers and reduce plastic waste, as hill towns have limited waste-handling capacity.
