Kaziranga Travel Guide

A UNESCO national park known for the one-horned rhinoceros.

  • Best months Nov–Apr
  • Ideal trip length 2–3 days

Kaziranga National Park in Assam is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the plains of the Brahmaputra, famous for the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Tall elephant grass, wetlands and forest also shelter wild water buffalo, elephants, swamp deer, many bird species and a good population of tigers. Plan two to three days.

Best time to visit

Recommended

The park is generally open from about November to April and closed during the monsoon, when the Brahmaputra floods the plains. Exact opening dates change with conditions, so check with the park authorities before booking. The cooler months give the best chances of seeing wildlife.

How to reach

By air

The nearest airport is Jorhat, roughly 95 km from the park, and Guwahati is about 190 km away with many more flights. Both need a road transfer.

By rail

Furkating is the nearest railhead, and Guwahati is the main railhead for most visitors. From either, taxis and buses continue to Kohora, the park's central range.

By road

The park lies along National Highway 715 and is reached from Guwahati in around five to six hours by road. Taxis and buses serve Kohora, where most visitors base themselves.

Where to stay

Most lodges and homestays are near Kohora, close to the central range, with others along the highway. Book early for the peak season from December to March, and choose places that follow responsible wildlife practices.

Top things to see and do

  1. 1

    Central Range (Kohora)

The most visited section of the park, with open grassland where rhinos and other wildlife are often seen.

  2. 2

    Jeep safari

Jeep safaris are the main way to see wildlife, led by a guide on set routes. Slots and permits are arranged through the park system, so book through official channels.

  3. 3

    Elephant safari

Elephant-back rides have long been offered in the early morning for close views of rhinos. Check what is currently offered, as arrangements can change.

  4. 4

    Greater one-horned rhinoceros

Kaziranga holds a large share of the world's population of this species, which is often seen grazing in open grassland.

  5. 5

    Birdwatching

Wetlands and grasslands attract resident birds and, in winter, migratory species, which can be seen from safari routes.

  6. 6

    Tea gardens of Assam

Assam's tea estates lie in the surrounding region and make for a pleasant stop on the way to or from the park.

Food to try

Assamese food is simple and often built around rice, fish and greens. Try maach tenga, a light sour fish curry, and pitika, mashed vegetables or fish mixed with mustard oil. Assam tea is widely available, and lodges usually serve both Assamese and general Indian meals.

Travel tips

  • Follow your guide's instructions and stay inside the vehicle during safaris; never get out or approach animals.
  • Check current opening dates, safari arrangements and permits before booking, as these can change with weather and park rules.
  • Keep noise low, avoid bright clothing and do not litter or feed animals.
  • Choose lodges and operators that follow responsible wildlife practices and support local communities.
