Manali Travel Guide
Snow peaks, Solang Valley and the road to Lahaul and Ladakh.
- Best months Mar–Jun, Sept–Oct
- Ideal trip length 3–5 days
Manali sits in the Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh at about 2,050 metres, ringed by pine forests and snow peaks beside the Beas river. It is one of India's most popular mountain destinations, mixing temples, cafes, adventure sports and snow, and it is the usual starting point for the road to Lahaul, Spiti and Ladakh. Plan three to five days.
Best time to visit
Recommended
March to June is pleasant and green, and September to October is clear with autumn colour. December to February brings snow and cold, which many people travel for. July and August are monsoon months, when heavy rain can cause landslides and road closures in the mountains.
How to reach
Kullu-Manali Airport (Bhuntar, KUU) is the nearest airport, about 50 km from Manali, with limited flights. Chandigarh is the larger alternative, followed by a long road journey.
Manali has no railway station. The nearest broad-gauge railhead is around Chandigarh or Kalka, and the narrow-gauge Kangra Valley line ends at Joginder Nagar. Most travellers combine a train with a bus or taxi.
Overnight buses run from Delhi and Chandigarh, and the highway through Mandi and Kullu is the main route. Road conditions change with weather, so check the situation before setting out.
Where to stay
Old Manali is popular with backpackers and cafe-goers, while the Mall Road area is busier and more convenient. Quieter options are in Naggar, Vashisht and Solang, which suit those who want views and calm.

Travel tips
- Check road status and weather before heading to Lahaul or Rohtang, because closures are common.

- Use registered operators for rafting, paragliding and skiing, and check safety equipment.
- Carry warm clothes in every season, and take it slow on your first day if you are not used to altitude.
