Himachal Pradesh
Dharamshala & McLeod Ganj Travel Guide
Tibetan culture, monasteries and treks under the Dhauladhar range.
- Best months Mar–Jun, Sept–Nov
- Ideal trip length 3–4 days
Dharamshala sits at the foot of the Dhauladhar range in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra valley. Its upper town, McLeod Ganj, is home to the Dalai Lama's residence and the Tibetan government-in-exile, which gives it a distinct Tibetan Buddhist character of monasteries, prayer flags and cafes. It suits three to four days of gentle sightseeing and short treks.
Best time to visit
Recommended
March to June is pleasant, and September to November is clear with good mountain views. Dharamshala is one of the wettest places in Himachal during the July to September monsoon, so heavy rain and cloud are likely. Winters are cold, with snow on the higher slopes.
How to reach
Kangra Airport (Gaggal, DHM) is the nearest airport, a short drive from Dharamshala, with limited flights. Chandigarh and Amritsar are larger alternatives.
Pathankot is the main broad-gauge railhead for Dharamshala. The narrow-gauge Kangra Valley railway also runs from Pathankot through the valley, though it is slow.
Overnight buses run from Delhi and Chandigarh, and the road from Pathankot is a few hours' drive. Local taxis connect Dharamshala town with McLeod Ganj and nearby villages.
Where to stay
McLeod Ganj and Dharamkot suit those who want cafes, monasteries and trekking access. Bhagsu and Naddi offer quieter stays with views. Lower Dharamshala is more of a commercial town, better for transport and shopping than for atmosphere.

Travel tips
- Carry a rain jacket from June to September, as showers can be heavy and sudden.
- Check weather conditions before trekking to Triund, and go with enough water and daylight to return.
- Dress modestly and be quiet in monasteries; ask before photographing people or prayer rooms.
- McLeod Ganj roads are narrow and busy, so a walk or a short taxi is easier than driving.
