Himachal Pradesh
Shimla Travel Guide
Colonial hill town with the Mall Road and a UNESCO toy train.
- Best months Mar–Jun, Oct–Dec
- Ideal trip length 2–4 days
Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, is a hill town spread along a ridge at about 2,200 metres. It was the summer capital of British India, and colonial buildings, a pedestrian Mall Road and wide valley views still define it. It suits a relaxed two to four days, and the narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a highlight in itself.
Best time to visit
Recommended
March to June brings pleasant, cool weather. October and November are clear and crisp, and December to February can bring snow for those who want a winter trip. July and August are monsoon months with heavy rain and a risk of landslides on mountain roads.
How to reach
Shimla Airport (SLV) is small and has limited services. Chandigarh International Airport (IXC) is the larger and more practical gateway, followed by a road transfer of a few hours.
The broad-gauge railhead is Kalka, from where the narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla railway climbs to Shimla through tunnels and bridges. Chandigarh railway station is also a common arrival point before continuing by road.
Shimla is connected by highway from Chandigarh via Kalka and Solan, and regular buses run from Delhi, Chandigarh and nearby hill towns. Expect slow traffic on weekends and holidays.
Where to stay
Staying near the Mall Road and the Ridge keeps you within walking distance of the main sights, though some lanes are steep. Quieter options are on the outskirts, such as Mashobra, Naldehra and Kufri, which suit those who want views and calm over convenience.
Top things to see and do
- 1
The Mall and the Ridge
A traffic-free promenade lined with shops and cafes, leading to a large open ridge with views of the surrounding hills.
- 2
Christ Church
A neo-Gothic church on the Ridge, one of Shimla's best-known landmarks.
- 3
Jakhu Temple
A hilltop temple dedicated to Hanuman, reached by a steep walk or ropeway, with wide views. Watch for monkeys.
- 4
Viceregal Lodge
A grand colonial building set in gardens, now home to the Indian Institute of Advanced Study and open for guided visits.
- 5
Kalka-Shimla Railway
A narrow-gauge mountain railway with scenic stretches, tunnels and stone viaducts, listed by UNESCO.
- 6
Kufri and Mashobra
Nearby viewpoints and forest walks, popular for short day trips and for snow in winter.
Food to try
Look for Himachali dishes such as siddu, a steamed bread served with ghee, chana madra and dham-style meals, along with Tibetan momos and thukpa. Cafes on the Mall serve baked goods, tea and coffee.
Travel tips
- Book the toy train in advance, because seats on popular services fill quickly.
- Carry layers even in summer, as evenings in the hills are cool.
- Drive carefully on mountain roads and avoid night driving where possible, especially in the monsoon.
- Vehicles are restricted on the Mall, so pack light and use taxis or walk for the final stretch.
