Himachal Pradesh
Spiti Valley Travel Guide
A high-altitude cold desert of ancient monasteries and starry skies.
- Best months Jun–Oct
- Ideal trip length 6–8 days
Spiti is a high-altitude cold desert valley in northern Himachal Pradesh, with barren mountains, clear skies and ancient Buddhist monasteries. Its main town, Kaza, sits at about 3,800 metres. The valley is remote and the roads are demanding, so it suits travellers who are comfortable with long drives and basic facilities. Plan six to eight days, including time to adjust to the altitude.
Best time to visit
Recommended
June to October is the main season, when both approach roads are usually open and the weather is clear. Winter, from roughly December to March, is extremely cold with heavy snow, limited services and road closures, though some travellers go for the snow landscapes and wildlife. Conditions can change quickly in any month.
How to reach
There is no airport in Spiti. The nearest airports are Kullu-Manali (Bhuntar) and Shimla, both with limited flights; Chandigarh is the larger gateway.
There is no railway in Spiti. The nearest practical railheads are Chandigarh and Kalka, from where you continue by road for a long journey.
Two routes lead to Spiti. The route from Shimla via Kinnaur is usually open for much of the year but can be affected by landslides. The route from Manali over the Kunzum Pass is open only in summer, typically from around June to October. Many people do a circuit using one route in and the other out.
Where to stay
Kaza has the widest choice of guesthouses and hotels. Villages such as Kibber, Langza and Komic offer simple homestays, and Tabo and Dhankar have basic stays. Facilities are limited, so book ahead in the peak summer months.

Food to try
Meals are simple and mostly vegetarian: thukpa, momos, dal with rice, Tibetan bread and butter tea. Homestays often serve home-cooked food. Carry snacks for long road days, as stops can be far apart.
Travel tips
- Allow time to adjust to altitude: avoid climbing too high too fast, drink water, and see a doctor if symptoms of altitude sickness appear.
- Fuel, ATMs and mobile network are limited, so refuel and withdraw cash when you can, and download offline maps.
- Check road status before you travel, because landslides and snow can close routes at short notice.
- Indian visitors generally do not need a special permit for the main Spiti circuit, but rules can change and foreign nationals may need permits; confirm with Himachal Tourism or the local administration.
