Gokarna Travel Guide

A temple town with quiet beaches along the Karnataka coast.

  • Best months Oct–Mar
  • Ideal trip length 2–3 days

Gokarna is a small temple town on the Arabian Sea coast of Karnataka, known both as an ancient pilgrimage centre and for a string of quiet beaches. The town has the Mahabaleshwar temple and a sacred beach, while Om Beach, Kudle Beach, Half Moon Beach and Paradise Beach lie a short distance away. It is far calmer than the large beach resorts, and two to three days is enough to enjoy the town, the beaches and the coastal walks.

Best time to visit

Recommended

October to March is the best season, with calmer seas and pleasant weather. April and May are hot and humid. The monsoon, roughly June to September, brings heavy rain and rough seas; swimming is unsafe, some beach shacks and boat services close, and beach trails can be slippery. Check IMD forecasts and local advice before travelling.

How to reach

By air

The nearest airports are Dabolim and Mopa in Goa, each a few hours away by road, and Hubballi, Mangaluru and others are further options. Check road travel times, as distances and road conditions vary.

By rail

Gokarna Road station on the Konkan Railway is the nearest railhead, roughly 10 km from the town, and is served by a number of trains on the coastal line. Ankola and Kumta are other stations on the same line. Auto-rickshaws and taxis connect the station with the town and beaches.

By road

Gokarna is reached by road from Goa, Mangaluru, Udupi and Hubballi along the coastal highway. State buses and private services run to the town, and taxis are easy to book. Allow extra time in the rains.

Where to stay

Stays range from simple guesthouses and homestays in the town to basic huts and small resorts near the beaches. Facilities away from the town can be basic, with limited power, water and mobile signal at times. Book ahead in the winter season and holidays, and expect many places to close in the monsoon.

Top things to see and do

  1. 1

    Mahabaleshwar Temple

An ancient temple in the town dedicated to Shiva, associated with the Atmalinga, and an important pilgrimage site; dress modestly and follow the temple rules.

  2. 2

    Gokarna Beach

The main town beach, used by pilgrims for rituals and by visitors for the sunset, and generally busy and lively.

  3. 3

    Om Beach

A beach named after the shape of its two curved bays, popular for sunsets and a calm walk, with simple cafes along the shore.

  4. 4

    Kudle Beach

A long, wide beach close to the town, with cafes and a relaxed feel, reached by a short path.

  5. 5

Half Moon Beach and Paradise Beach

Quieter, smaller beaches reached on foot over the cliffs or by boat from other beaches; the trek is uneven and best done in daylight.

  6. 6

    Coastal trek

A path along the cliffs linking several beaches, with sea views, suited to those with sturdy shoes and basic fitness.

Food to try

Coastal Karnataka food is the speciality, with fresh seafood, fish curry and rice, and vegetarian dishes made with coconut. Look for dosas, neer dosa and idli at local eateries. Choose clean and busy places and drink only bottled or purified water.

Travel tips

  • Do not swim in rough water, and follow lifeguard and local warnings, as strong currents are common, especially in the monsoon.
  • Dress modestly in the town and temple, as this is a pilgrimage centre, and keep beachwear for the beaches.
  • Carry back your plastic and waste from the beaches and trails, and avoid disturbing wildlife and turtles.
  • Use daylight for the beach trek and boat transfers, carry water, and confirm boat availability before you plan an onward journey.
