Coorg (Kodagu) Travel Guide

Coffee estates, misty hills and waterfalls in the Western Ghats.

  • Best months Oct–Mar
  • Ideal trip length 2–3 days

Coorg, officially Kodagu, is a hill district in the Western Ghats of southern Karnataka, known for coffee estates, misty hills, waterfalls and the distinct culture of the Kodava people. Madikeri is the main town and a convenient base. The district is best enjoyed slowly, with estate walks, viewpoints and homestay meals, and three days is a comfortable length of stay.

Best time to visit

Recommended

October to March is the most pleasant season, with cool, clear weather. Coffee blossoms usually appear around March to April, and the harvest season is generally in the cooler months. The monsoon, roughly June to September, brings very heavy rain, mist and a risk of landslides and road blockages; some attractions and activities may be closed, so check local conditions and IMD forecasts before travelling.

How to reach

By air

Coorg has no airport of its own. Mysuru, Mangaluru and Kannur are commonly used airports, and Bengaluru is the largest gateway. Each requires a road transfer of a few hours, so check current flights and travel times.

By rail

There is no railhead in Coorg. Mysuru is the nearest major station, with good connections from Bengaluru and other cities, followed by a road journey of around two to three hours to Madikeri. Hassan and Mangaluru are other rail options.

By road

Madikeri is connected by road to Mysuru, Bengaluru, Mangaluru and Kannur. State buses and taxis run on these routes. Ghat roads have many bends, and heavy rain can slow or interrupt travel, so check conditions before you go.

Where to stay

Homestays in coffee estates are a characteristic way to stay, with local meals and estate walks, and there are also resorts and guesthouses in and around Madikeri, Virajpet and Kushalnagar. The district is spread out, so choose a base that suits your plans, and book early in winter and for long weekends.

Homestays often serve these dishes, and filter coffee from local estates is widely available. Vegetarian options are easy to find.

Travel tips

  • Check weather and road conditions before travelling in the monsoon, as landslides and heavy rain can affect roads and attractions.

  • Keep a safe distance from wildlife such as elephants and snakes, and follow the instructions of local guides and the forest department.
  • Avoid plastic, carry back your waste, and do not litter in forests, waterfalls or viewpoints.
