Ooty (Udhagamandalam) Travel Guide

The Nilgiri hill station of tea gardens and a mountain railway.

  • Best months Oct–May
  • Ideal trip length 2–3 days

Ooty, officially Udhagamandalam, is the best-known hill station of the Nilgiri hills in Tamil Nadu, set at over 2,000 metres among tea estates, eucalyptus groves and rolling grassland. It has a colonial-era past, a cool climate, a botanical garden, a lake and a famous heritage mountain railway. Two to three days is a comfortable stay, and nearby Coonoor and Kotagiri add quieter options.

Best time to visit

Recommended

March to June and September to November are pleasant for sightseeing, with cool days and cold nights. December and January can be quite cold, with frost possible in some valleys. The south-west and north-east monsoons bring heavy rain and mist, so check the forecast before travel.

How to reach

By air

The nearest major airport is Coimbatore, from where Ooty is roughly a three to four hour road journey depending on traffic. Taxis and buses are available from the airport and the city.

By rail

The nearest main railhead is Coimbatore, with Mettupalayam at the foot of the hills. From Mettupalayam, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage rack-and-pinion line, climbs through Coonoor to Ooty. Seats on this train are in demand, so check current services and book ahead.

By road

Ooty is reached by road from Coimbatore and Mettupalayam through Coonoor, and from Mysuru through Gudalur, with a forest stretch where night traffic rules may apply. Ghat roads have many hairpin bends, so allow extra time and avoid driving after dark if you are unused to hill roads.

Where to stay

Stay near the town centre for easy access to the lake and markets, or choose a quieter spot among tea estates or in Coonoor and Kotagiri. Heritage cottages, homestays and hotels are available across budgets. Book ahead for school holidays and the summer season.

Travel tips

  • Carry warm clothes in all seasons, as evenings and early mornings are cold even when days feel mild.
  • Weekends and holidays get crowded, so visit viewpoints early and expect slow traffic on the ghat roads.
  • Avoid plastic and litter in the hills; the Nilgiris restrict some single-use plastics, so carry a reusable bottle and bag.
  • Keep a safe distance from wild animals on forest roads and do not feed them.
