Munnar Travel Guide

Rolling tea estates and high peaks in the Western Ghats.

  • Best months Sept–May
  • Ideal trip length 2–3 days

Munnar is a hill station in the Western Ghats of Kerala, known for endless tea plantations, misty valleys and high grassland peaks. Its main draws are scenic drives, tea-garden walks, Eravikulam National Park and a cool climate. Two to three days is a good length of stay.

Best time to visit

Recommended

September to March is the most comfortable period, with cool days and clear views, while winter nights can be cold. April and May are mild but busier. The monsoon months bring very heavy rain, mist and a risk of landslides on hill roads, so check weather alerts and road advisories before travel.

How to reach

By air

The nearest major airport is Cochin International Airport near Kochi, roughly four to five hours away by road depending on traffic. Taxis and buses can be arranged from the airport and Kochi.

By rail

There is no railway station in Munnar itself. The usual railheads are Aluva and Ernakulam near Kochi, with other stations in the region also used. Continue by bus or taxi up the hill road. Check current train and bus options before planning.

By road

Munnar is reached by road from Kochi, via Kothamangalam and Adimali, and from Madurai or Theni on the Tamil Nadu side. The final stretch is a winding ghat road with hairpin bends, so allow extra time and avoid driving after dark in heavy rain.

Where to stay

Staying in or just outside Munnar town keeps the market and bus services close, while plantation areas offer quieter views over tea slopes. Resorts, homestays and hotels are available across budgets. Book ahead for holidays and the post-monsoon season.

    Top Station

A high viewpoint near the Tamil Nadu border, known for wide views over the valleys on clear days.

  5. 5

    Anamudi

  6. 6

    Neelakurinji hills

Slopes that carpet purple when the neelakurinji shrub blooms, an event that happens only about once every twelve years.

Food to try

Look for Kerala meals served on a banana leaf, appam with stew, and fresh local tea, coffee, spices and home-made chocolates from shops. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food are widely available.

Travel tips

  • Carry warm clothes and a rain jacket, and expect fog that can cut visibility on the hill roads.
  • Check weather alerts and road advisories during the monsoon, when landslides can close roads.
  • Stay on marked paths in plantations and the national park, and do not litter or disturb wildlife.
  • Buy tea and spices from reputable shops, and check park timings and closures before you plan the day.
