Alleppey (Alappuzha) Travel Guide
The gateway to the Kerala backwaters, canals and houseboats.
- Best months Nov–Mar
- Ideal trip length 1–2 days
Alleppey, officially Alappuzha, is the gateway to the Kerala backwaters, a network of lagoons, canals and lakes lined with coconut palms and paddy fields. Visitors come for houseboat cruises, canoe rides through narrow canals, village life and the quiet beaches along the coast. One to two days is enough, and it fits easily between Kochi and other parts of Kerala.
Best time to visit
Recommended
November to February is the most comfortable season, with pleasant weather on the water. March to May is hot and humid. The monsoon months bring heavy rain, and cruising can be limited by weather, so check conditions before booking. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is usually held in August or September, but the date varies each year, so check the current announcement.
How to reach
The nearest major airport is Cochin International Airport near Kochi, roughly one and a half to two hours away by road. Taxis and buses are available from the airport and from Kochi.
Alappuzha railway station lies on the coastal line between Ernakulam and Kayamkulam, with trains from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and other cities. Auto-rickshaws and taxis connect the station with the boat jetties.
Alleppey is reached by road from Kochi in about two hours along the coast, and it is linked by bus and road to the rest of Kerala. Taxis are easy to arrange.
Where to stay
Stay in town for easy access to jetties, canals and the beach, or in a village homestay along the backwaters for quieter surroundings. Houseboats offer overnight cruises, and homestays and resorts suit all budgets. Book ahead in winter and holiday periods.

Food to try
Seafood is a highlight, especially karimeen, the pearl spot fish, usually fried or wrapped in banana leaf. Toddy shops serve a local palm drink with spicy fish and meat dishes, and Kerala meals, appam with stew and duck curry are common. Vegetarian food is widely available.
Travel tips
- Choose a registered or classified houseboat from an authorised operator, and ask about waste handling and safety equipment before booking.
- Avoid plastic on the water; carry a reusable bottle and take your waste back ashore, as the backwaters are a fragile ecosystem.
- Confirm the route, duration and what is included before you board, and avoid unofficial touts at the jetty.
- Use mosquito protection and sunscreen, as it is humid and mosquitoes are common near water.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are enough for Alleppey?
One day with an overnight houseboat or a day cruise covers the main experience. Stay two days to add the beach and village canoe trips.
When is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race?
It is usually held in August or September, but the exact date changes each year. Check the official Kerala Tourism announcement before planning.
Is a houseboat the only way to see the backwaters?
No. Shared boats, small canoes and village boat rides are alternatives, and they are often cheaper and have a lower impact than a large houseboat.
