Kochi (Cochin) Travel Guide

A harbour city of Fort Kochi heritage, spice trade and Chinese fishing nets.

  • Best months Nov–Mar
  • Ideal trip length 2–3 days

Kochi, also known as Cochin, is a port city on Kerala's coast where Arab, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, British and Jewish influences have mingled over centuries. The historic heart is Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, with old churches, spice warehouses, art cafes and waterfront walks, while Ernakulam is the modern commercial centre. Two to three days suits most visitors, and Kochi is also the main gateway for Munnar and the backwaters.

Best time to visit

Recommended

November to February is the most pleasant season, with cooler, drier weather for walking. March to May is hot and humid. The monsoon brings heavy rain, which can disrupt outdoor plans, though the city is green and quieter then. Check the forecast before travel.

How to reach

By air

Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery, about 30 to 35 km from the city centre, has domestic and international flights. Taxis, app cabs and buses connect the airport with Ernakulam and Fort Kochi.

By rail

Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town are the main stations, with trains from across Kerala and from cities such as Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi. From the stations, taxis, buses, the metro and the water ferries connect to Fort Kochi.

By road

Kochi is well linked by road to the rest of Kerala, with buses from Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Munnar and other towns. Within the city, buses, autos and taxis are available, and heavy traffic can slow travel in the daytime.

Where to stay

Stay in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry for heritage buildings, cafes and walking access to the main sights, or in Ernakulam for easier rail and metro links and wider choices. Heritage homes, homestays and hotels are available for all budgets. Book ahead in winter.

Travel tips

  • Use the Kochi Metro and the Water Metro and public ferries to avoid road traffic, and check their current routes and timings.
  • Dress modestly at churches, synagogues and temples, and ask before photographing inside places of worship.
  • Respect the lives of local fishermen at the fishing nets, and avoid interfering with their work.
  • Carry sun protection and water, as the humid heat can tire you quickly.
