Hampi Travel Guide

The ruined Vijayanagara capital among boulders on the Tungabhadra.

  • Best months Oct–Feb
  • Ideal trip length 2–3 days

Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Karnataka, set among boulder-strewn hills along the Tungabhadra river. It was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire between the 14th and 16th centuries, and its ruins of temples, markets, palaces and royal enclosures spread across a vast landscape. Allow at least two to three days, as the sites are spread out and are best explored slowly, ideally in the cooler hours.

Best time to visit

Recommended

October to February is the best time, with pleasant weather for walking and cycling among the ruins. March to May is very hot, so start early and rest in the afternoon. The monsoon brings green fields but also rain and a higher river, and some river crossings may be affected. The Hampi Utsav, a cultural festival, is typically held around November, but dates vary, so check with Karnataka Tourism.

How to reach

By air

The nearest airport is Vidyanagar (Toranagallu), roughly 30 to 40 km away, with limited flights. Hubballi and Bengaluru are larger options, followed by a long road or rail journey. Check current flight availability.

By rail

Hosapete (Hospet) Junction, about 13 km from Hampi, is the nearest railhead, with trains from Bengaluru, Hubballi and other cities. Auto-rickshaws, taxis and buses connect Hosapete to Hampi.

By road

Hampi is connected by road to Hosapete, Bengaluru (a long drive of around seven to eight hours) and Hubballi. State buses run to Hosapete, and taxis are easy to find for the last stretch.

Where to stay

Visitors stay either in Hampi itself, which has guesthouses and homestays close to the main temple area, or in Hosapete, which has more hotels and is better for easier connections. Staying in Hampi puts you near the sunrise and sunset spots. Rules in some zones near the ruins and on the far bank of the river can change, so confirm where you can stay.

Travel tips

  • Carry water, a hat and sun protection, as most sites are open-air with little shade, and wear shoes that suit rocky ground.
  • Do not climb or sit on the ruins and carved pillars, and follow signs for restricted areas, to protect the monuments.
  • Use only authorised coracle operators and official ferry points for river crossings, and avoid them when water levels are high.
  • Dress modestly at active temples, remove footwear where required, and check opening days and timings before your visit.
