Rameswaram & Dhanushkodi Travel Guide

A pilgrimage island with the Ramanathaswamy Temple and a ghost-town tip at Dhanushkodi.

  • Best months Oct–Mar
  • Ideal trip length 2–3 days

Rameswaram is a sacred island town in Tamil Nadu on Pamban Island, connected to the mainland by bridges, and is one of the major Hindu pilgrimage centres. Beyond it lies Dhanushkodi, a ghost town at the tip of the island, closest to Sri Lanka. The area combines temple visits, sea-bathing rituals and wide, windswept coastline. One to two days is enough.

Best time to visit

Recommended

October to April is generally the most comfortable season, with milder weather. Summers are hot and humid, and the northeast monsoon from about October to December and cyclone season can bring heavy rain and rough seas. Check weather advisories before travel, since conditions can affect access to Dhanushkodi.

How to reach

By air

The nearest major airport is Madurai, roughly 170 km away, with flights from several Indian cities. From there, taxis and buses continue to Rameswaram by road.

By rail

Rameswaram has its own railway station, with trains from Chennai, Madurai and other cities. The route crosses the Pamban rail bridge. The old 1914 bridge has been joined by a new vertical-lift rail bridge opened in 2025, so check current train services.

By road

Rameswaram is reached by road from Madurai in around four hours. The road crosses to the island over the Indira Gandhi Road Bridge, which runs beside the railway bridge. Buses and taxis are widely available.

Where to stay

Rameswaram has hotels, lodges and pilgrim guesthouses, many near the temple and the sea. Rooms fill up around festivals and weekends, so book ahead. Dhanushkodi has few or no places to stay, so most visitors return to Rameswaram.

Top things to see and do

  1. 1

    Ramanathaswamy Temple

A major Hindu temple famous for its very long pillared corridors and its 22 theerthams, or sacred wells, within the complex. Bathing rituals follow a set order; dress modestly and check the current rules.

  2. 2

    Agni Theertham

The sea bathing spot near the temple where pilgrims take a ritual dip before visiting the shrine. Be careful of the waves.

  3. 3

    Pamban Bridge

The historic railway bridge opened in 1914 stands beside the road bridge, and a new vertical-lift rail bridge opened in 2025. Check current details before visiting.

  4. 4

    Dhanushkodi

A ghost town at the southern tip of the island, left in ruins by the 1964 cyclone, with a quiet beach and the ruins of a church, a railway station and houses.

  5. 5

    Adam's Bridge (Ram Setu) viewpoint

A viewing point near Arichal Munai where the shallow chain of limestone shoals towards Sri Lanka can be seen from the shore.

  6. 6

    Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Memorial

A memorial in Rameswaram to the former President, born in the town, with exhibits on his life and work.

Food to try

Rameswaram offers simple vegetarian meals, idli and dosa, and fresh seafood in many restaurants near the coast. Temple towns typically have vegetarian eating places around the main streets. Seafood is best taken from busy, hygienic places.

Travel tips

  • Dhanushkodi has very few facilities, so carry drinking water, snacks, sun protection and some cash, and take your waste back with you.
  • Check current rules on how far vehicles may go beyond Dhanushkodi, and do not go beyond the permitted point; the sea can be rough and the tide changes.
  • Be careful when bathing in the sea, as waves and currents can be strong; follow local advice and avoid swimming in unmarked places.
  • Dress modestly at the temple, and follow queue and ritual rules, which can vary on festival days.
