Madurai Travel Guide
An ancient temple city centred on the Meenakshi Amman Temple.
- Best months Oct–Mar
- Ideal trip length 1–2 days
Madurai is one of South India's oldest living cities, set on the banks of the Vaigai river in Tamil Nadu and built around the great Meenakshi Amman Temple. It is a busy, colourful temple town of bazaars, flower markets and festivals, and it is a natural base for exploring southern Tamil Nadu. Two days is enough for the main sights.
Best time to visit
Recommended
October to March is the most comfortable season, with warm days and cooler evenings. Summers are very hot, and the northeast monsoon brings rain from around October to December. The Chithirai festival, usually in April or May, is a highlight but draws very large crowds, so book ahead.
How to reach
Madurai has an airport with flights to Chennai and several other Indian cities, and it is a few kilometres from the city centre. Taxis and app-based cabs are available.
Madurai Junction is a major railhead on the southern network, with trains from Chennai, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Rameswaram and other cities. The station is close to the temple area.
Madurai is connected by highway to Chennai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari and the hill stations of Kodaikanal and Munnar. Government and private buses run frequently from the main bus stands.
Where to stay
Staying within walking distance of the Meenakshi Temple makes it easy to visit at quieter times of the day and to explore the old streets. Lodges, mid-range hotels and heritage stays are available, while the newer parts of the city have more modern options. Book early during festivals.
