Ranthambore Travel Guide

Tiger reserve with a hill fort and ruined palaces inside the forest.

  • Best months Oct–Jun
  • Ideal trip length 2–3 days

Ranthambore National Park and Tiger Reserve is in eastern Rajasthan, near the town of Sawai Madhopur. Dry deciduous forest, lakes and rocky hills surround the old Ranthambore Fort, which is part of the UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan. It is one of India's best-known places to look for wild tigers, although a sighting is never guaranteed. Plan two to three days so you can take more than one safari.

Best time to visit

Recommended

October to March is pleasant for travel, with cool mornings that suit safaris. Many visitors say the hot months of April to June give good chances of seeing animals near waterholes, but the heat is intense. The park generally closes for the monsoon, so check the current opening dates and any seasonal closures before you plan.

How to reach

The nearest major airport is Jaipur, around four hours away by road. Taxis can be booked for the transfer to Sawai Madhopur.

Sawai Madhopur is a railhead on the main Delhi to Mumbai line, with trains from Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai and other cities. The park is a short road trip from the station.

Where to stay

Lodges and hotels lie along the road between Sawai Madhopur and the park gates, while budget stays are in town. Choose a property close to the park entrance to save time on early-morning safari days, and book ahead in the cooler months.

Top things to see and do

A temple inside the fort that draws many pilgrims and is among the best-known places of worship in the area.

  4. 4

    Lakes inside the park

Padam Talao and other lakes are good places to spot deer, birds and crocodiles, and are often visited on safari.

  5. 5

    Birdwatching

Waterbirds, owls, raptors and woodland birds can be seen across the park, especially around its lakes.

  6. 6

    Village and craft visits

Local craft and village-based initiatives around Sawai Madhopur let visitors see everyday life beyond the park.

Food to try

Lodges and restaurants serve North Indian and Rajasthani food, including dal baati churma and a wide range of vegetarian dishes. Many lodges offer set meals, and packed breakfast can be arranged for early safaris.

Travel tips

  • Book safaris only through official channels and check the current zone and booking rules, as they change and tickets can sell out in the busy months.
  • A tiger sighting is never guaranteed, so keep expectations realistic and enjoy the other wildlife and the fort.
  • Follow the guide's instructions, keep quiet, do not feed or call out to animals, and never leave the vehicle inside the park.
  • Wear dull or neutral colours, carry layers for cold mornings, and keep plastic and litter out of the forest.
