Agra Travel Guide
Home of the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.
- Best months Oct–Mar
- Ideal trip length 1–2 days
Agra on the banks of the Yamuna was a Mughal capital, and it holds three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. It is an easy one or two-day trip from Delhi, but staying a night lets you see the Taj Mahal at sunrise before the crowds build up.
Best time to visit
Recommended
October to March has the best weather. Winter mornings can be foggy, which sometimes hides the Taj Mahal at dawn. April to June is very hot, and the monsoon months are humid but quieter.
How to reach
Agra has a small airport with limited services, so most visitors arrive through Delhi and continue by train or road. Check current flight schedules before relying on a direct flight.
Agra Cantt is the main railway station and is well connected to Delhi, Jaipur, Gwalior, Jhansi and Mumbai. Fast day-return trains run from Delhi, which makes a one-day visit possible.
The Yamuna Expressway links Agra with Delhi and Noida, and expressways and highways connect it to Lucknow and Jaipur. Taxis from Delhi are a convenient option for a day trip.
Where to stay
Stay near Taj Ganj if you want to walk to the Taj Mahal, though the area is crowded and busy. The Cantonment area and the Fatehabad Road belt have more mid-range and upscale hotels with easier road access.
Top things to see and do
- 1

- 2
Agra Fort
A large red sandstone fort on the Yamuna, UNESCO-listed, with palaces, courtyards and a distant view of the Taj Mahal.
- 3
Fatehpur Sikri
Akbar's deserted capital, about 40 km west of Agra, with a mosque, palaces and courtyards in remarkably good condition.
- 4
Itimad-ud-Daulah
A delicately inlaid tomb across the Yamuna, sometimes called the Baby Taj, quieter than the main monuments.
- 5
Mehtab Bagh
A garden on the opposite bank of the river with a view of the Taj Mahal, especially pleasant at sunset.
- 6

The tomb complex of Emperor Akbar, set in wide gardens a short drive from the city centre.
Food to try
Agra is known for petha, a translucent sweet made from ash gourd, and for dalmoth, a spiced lentil snack. Try bedai with sabzi at breakfast, and Mughlai dishes such as kebabs and biryani in the old city.
Travel tips
- Plan around the Friday closure of the Taj Mahal, and book tickets through official channels.
- Arrive at the Taj Mahal gates early to avoid queues; security rules limit what you can carry inside, so travel light.
- Agree the price of autos, guides and rickshaws before you start, or use app-based cabs.
- Combine Agra with Fatehpur Sikri on the same trip, leaving enough time for the road.
