Rann of Kutch Travel Guide
A vast white salt desert, Kutch crafts and a winter festival.
- Best months Nov–Feb
- Ideal trip length 2–3 days
The Great Rann of Kutch is a vast seasonal salt desert in western Gujarat, near the Pakistan border. After the monsoon the land dries into a bright white plain of salt that glows at sunrise, sunset and under a full moon. The area around Dhordo is the best-known base, and the nearby district of Kutch is rich in handicrafts, villages and history. Plan three days, including time in Bhuj.
Best time to visit
Recommended
November to February is the main season, when the salt flats are dry, the weather is cooler and a winter festival with a tent city is usually held near Dhordo. Dates and arrangements vary each year, so check with Gujarat Tourism. During the monsoon the Rann floods and is generally not accessible, and summers are very hot.
How to reach
Bhuj is the nearest airport, with flights from Mumbai and some other cities. From Bhuj, Dhordo is roughly a two-hour drive by road.
Bhuj is the nearest railhead, with trains from Ahmedabad, Mumbai and other cities. Taxis and buses run from Bhuj towards Dhordo and the Rann.
The road from Bhuj to Dhordo is well used by taxis and tour operators. Ahmedabad is also connected to Bhuj by road, but it is a long journey, so many visitors break it up with a stop.
Where to stay
Options include tent cities near Dhordo, village-style stays with traditional round huts, and hotels in Bhuj. The tent city is popular in the winter season, so book well ahead. Bhuj is a more flexible base for sightseeing and shopping.
