Jodhpur Travel Guide
The Blue City beneath the mighty Mehrangarh Fort.
- Best months Oct–Mar
- Ideal trip length 1–2 days
Jodhpur, the Blue City, lies at the edge of the Thar desert and is dominated by Mehrangarh Fort, one of the largest forts in India. The old city below the fort is a maze of blue-painted houses, bazaars and stepwells. It is a good base for Rajasthan's desert circuit, and two days is a comfortable stay.
Best time to visit
Recommended
October to March is the best season, with warm days and cool nights. Summers from April to June are very hot, and the monsoon months of July to September are humid with limited rain. Cultural events at the fort take place in the cooler months.
How to reach
Jodhpur Airport (JDH) has flights from Delhi, Mumbai and a few other cities, and it is a short drive from the city centre.
Jodhpur Junction has trains from Delhi, Jaipur, Jaisalmer and other cities, including overnight services. It is a convenient way to continue to Jaisalmer.
Highways link Jodhpur to Jaipur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer and Pushkar. A drive to Jaisalmer takes around five to six hours.
Where to stay
The area around the Clock Tower and Sardar Market puts you close to the old city, and the lanes below the fort are best for rooftop guesthouses with views of the fort. Mid-range and upscale hotels are found in the newer parts of town and around the palace.
