Lonavala & Khandala Travel Guide

Sahyadri hill stations with caves, forts, lakes and monsoon waterfalls.

  • Best months Jun–Dec
  • Ideal trip length 1–2 days

Lonavala and Khandala are twin hill stations in the Sahyadri range of Maharashtra, set between Mumbai and Pune. They are popular weekend escapes with green valleys, lakes, waterfalls, viewpoints and old rock-cut caves and forts nearby. Plan one to two days, and expect crowds on weekends and during the monsoon.

Best time to visit

Recommended

The monsoon from June to September is the most popular time, when the hills turn green and waterfalls flow, but it is also the most crowded and the riskiest, with slippery trails and strong currents. October to February is pleasant and clearer, while March to May is warm. Check the weather before you go.

How to reach

By air

Pune airport is the nearest major airport, and Mumbai is the other option. Both involve a road transfer, and travel times depend on traffic.

By rail

Lonavala is a station on the Mumbai to Pune railway line, with local and long-distance trains. Khandala is close to Lonavala and is reached from the same station.

By road

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the older highway both pass by, and Lonavala is a drive of a few hours from either city, longer on busy weekends. Taxis and buses are available.

Where to stay

Hotels, resorts and guesthouses are spread across Lonavala town and the hills. Staying outside the main market gives a quieter experience. Weekends and monsoon months are busy and rates rise, so book ahead.

Top things to see and do

  1. 1

    Karla and Bhaja Caves

Ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, with carved halls and pillars. Karla is known for its large chaitya hall.

  2. 2

    Lohagad Fort

A hill fort on a ridge with long approaches and wide views. It is popular for a short trek, though trails are slippery and risky in heavy rain.

  3. 3

    Bhushi Dam

A dam with stepped spillways that are popular in the monsoon. Water levels can rise suddenly, so follow local warnings and do not enter the water.

  4. 4

    Tiger's Leap and viewpoints

Cliff-edge viewpoints over the Sahyadri valleys. Stay behind safety rails, particularly in mist and rain.

  5. 5

    Lonavala and Rajmachi trails

Forest trails and a trek towards the Rajmachi fort area, best done with a local guide and in good weather.

  6. 6

    Lakes and Tungarli

Lakes and reservoirs around Lonavala are used for quiet walks and views, subject to local access rules.

Food to try

Lonavala is famous for chikki, a hard sweet made with jaggery and nuts, along with fudge. Roadside stalls serve corn, vada pav, bhajiya and hot tea in the rains, and restaurants offer Maharashtrian and North Indian food.

Travel tips

  • Avoid waterfalls, dams and streams in heavy rain, as flash floods and slippery rocks cause accidents each monsoon. Follow local warnings and closures.
  • Do not drive or trek after dark in the monsoon, and expect heavy traffic on weekends on the expressway and ghat roads.
  • Check current entry rules and timings for the caves and forts, and respect the monuments by not touching or marking the carvings.
  • Keep the hills clean by not littering, and do not drink alcohol near water bodies or cliff edges.
